  1. I love that they’re using 90’s songs now for episode titles. They went from the 80’s to 2000’s, skipping right over the 90’s. This brings back great memories from high school.

Yes, I’m that old. But still love Degrassi!!!

  2. Good but how are they going give TWENTY-FIVE student characters decent screentime with sixteen episodes in total(EIGHT if you count these two-parters as one episode)? My God, what the hell???

  3. Kary,
What season do you prefer more, 8 or 11.5? Never did I ever think that I’d find something as cringeworthy as season 8, but I was WRONG!!!!!

I loved Now or Never, but New Beginnings isn’t that great so far. I think it was absolutely pointless to put Cake back together in Nowhere to Run just to break them up one episode later (or part 2 of the next episode). Same goes for Need You Now for Imogeli’s relationship! I know the writers probably eliminated those couples just so they can slowly put EClare back together, but A) they could’ve done it in a more less obvious way and B) the writers do NOT need to make anymore one episode lasting relationships to use as filler for storylines. It’s a horrible mistake.

Next, I didn’t think that I would feel the loss of the class of 2011, but I have. I find it completely unbelievable that Katie & Marisol are magically the HBIC’s of Degrassi. A popular guy like Drew thought Marisol was annoying and Katie was barely existent, so how did that happen? It just felt random. And I love Fiona, but I feel like she’s out of place on the show now and in my opinion, I feel like she looks significantly older than most of the students there.

Finally, this may or may not be my last season of watching Degrassi because after seeing that 20+ cast members are going to be on next season, character(s) are going to get no development whatsoever next season. Everyone added should’ve been a sophomore at least (like wtf, why add a senior?). So what are your thoughts on how they’ll handle that?

    PS,
I know this block isn’t over yet, so there may be a chance for this block to redeem itself in my eyes. Everything from Smash into You-In the Cold, Cold Night I actually have high hopes for, so hopefully they’re good!

    1. I agree with you completely. And too add, Degrassi is becoming too soap opera’ish. Way too many love triangles that are so unecessary. Eli, Jake and Drew are not all that an neither is Clare, Jenna and Katie. The funny thing too guys like Eli would never date a girl like Clare. They date girls like Bianca and Imogen. I can see Drew and Clare though. My little rant.

      1. I understand what you’re saying and I could see Drew/Clare too lol if Degrassi used season 12 to focus on teen issues rather than A breaking up with B because they aren’t over C, who is in a love triangle with D & F, who has a gay crush on G, then I’d be VERY pleased.

    2. You literally took the words right from my mouth. Especially when you said “you didn’t think you’d feel the loss of the class of 2011”. I literally just said that to someone else like 10 minutes ago.

      1. I really like Clare’s class and the juniors weren’t that bad at all, so I thought that losing Holly J and them wasn’t going to be so bad because there were still a lot of characters left on the show that I liked! I was wrong lol About ten minutes into Underneath it All I was saying to myself “Yeah…this episode needs Holly J she would’ve set Katie and Marisol straight.” Then I started saying quotes like that about every episode! Maybe the loss of these characters wouldn’t have felt so big if the current characters got better storylines (KC & Jenna’s is great and I’m hoping Dave/Alli’s will be and hoping the same for Bianca’s storyline too).

    3. I completely agree as well. Season 8 was horrendous and I didn’t think anything else could compare (besides s9, a bit) until now. 11.5 is unbelievably boring and all about pointless couples. I love Fiona, too, and she was my favorite until now—I also feel like she looks way older. I don’t know, seeing her have a crush on Imogen seems weird because it looks like a 20-year-old crushing on a 15-yr-old (I know those aren’t their ages, but), and I don’t really buy it.

I didn’t really like Now or Never, but it was miles better that what we’ve seen so far of 11.5.
Also, I feel like they’re butchering Fiona’s character in a way…she seems so much older and out of place, and it’s annoying. I wish she had just graduated.

I miss class of 2011, too. Degrassi will never stop adding tons of new characters to a cast that is already half-developed—it’s freaking ridiculous! And adding a senior? Okay?
It seems like every child actor in Canada has appeared or will appear on Degrassi. I am so done. I couldn’t even force myself to watch the latest episode because I read the recap and it sounded like a snoozefest.

      1. ANEN TO EVERYTHING YOU JUST SAID!!!!!! Lol that is exactly why I can’t ship Fimogen! Fiona looks way too old for her.

        And Also:
Underneath it All: Cake, Tori/Zig/Maya love triangle, slowly starting Fimogen.

Can’t Tell Me Nothing: (Actually I don’t think this focused on couples but correct me if I’m wrong).

Not Ready To Make Nice: Fimogen, Imogeli

        Need You Now: Imogeli

        Smash into You: Dalli

        Hollaback Girl: Krew/Drianca (I’m guessing)

In The Cold, Cold, Night: EClare, Fimogen.

Although im looking forward to the last three episodes, all of them still revolve around couples! Degrassi needs to stop using couples for all their plots and get back to stuff we actually care about.

      2. What Im hoping for in the season final. Eli & Clare don’t feel the same way any more romantically and go their own way. Fiona tells Imogen how she feels they kiss and Fiona realises that she was wrong but they do stay friends. Like what happened to Eli and Imogen. This will give closure to the stupid ship wars…… Fiona should be focusing on herself and like who she is. Same goes for Eli. Eli needs to accept his mental illness and move on. This is what you do to become an adult.

  4. One of the problems is the fact that with Holly J’s class gone, we’re being forced to care about characters we haven’t gotten to know because they haven’t been around long enough to have been developed properly. The same thing happened in season 8–Holly J, Sav, Anya, Jane–these were characters who had just been introduced during the previous season, and with Emma, Spinner, Manny and co. gone, these new kids needed to fill their shoes. The problem was that at that point, we didn’t care about most of them, which is why s8 was so weak. We just weren’t emotionally invested enough in these new characters to care about what happened to them.

However, the writers were wise in introducing these characters as 10th graders in season 7, ensuring that viewers would have plenty of time to get to know them by the time they graduated. Why new characters are being brought on as juniors and seniors is ridiculous.

    1. Agreed. And in my opinion these actors are ok, but Holly J and them were far better, even when they were forced on us in season 8. I actually love these group of freshmen that 11.5 has brought us, but Katie and pretty much most of the class of 2012 isn’t really that strong (Munro has been doing great at doing Eli’s scenes and with Imogen seeming less of a stalker this season Cristine is doing a good job at portraying her. I know Annie is a good actress, but the randomness they’re doing with Fiona right now doesn’t really require top notch acting skills). Also, I love the class of 2013 right now (with the exception of drama queen Clare. Writers, PLEASE return her to normal soon).

    2. It looks like what they’re doing with the niners is good, but by the time it has any noticeable consequences, it’ll be too late for most of the viewers. The niners have pretty much taken the back-seat and gotten a few little plots so far, so by the time they move up in grades and it’s their time to shine, we’ll at least know a bit about the characters since we’d seen them (although in small roles) back in 11.5

  5. I was talking to someone about the stupidity in bringing in new characters so old because they’d be so close to graduation, but then he brought up an interesting point – most of the fans of the show can relate to the older kids more than the younger kids.

I thought about it, and it’s true. I’m about the same age as the niners yet I feel like I can’t relate to them at all. I feel like I can relate waaaaay more to the older kids. Thinking about this made me feel kind of weird. I’m not sure if the writers are making the niners feel “too young” or what, but something about them makes it unrelatable to me. I don’t know if it’s just the batch of characters or their traits either, it just feels weird.

    1. I understand what you’re saying about relating to older characters more than the younger, but that still doesn’t mean you have to bring in 10 new juniors or seniors every block you know? In my opinion, Imogen, Jake, Mo, Katie, Marisol, and Owen (even Eli to a degree) have a lot more developing they can do. Especially Jake and Mo. We can still use them rather than bringing in new characters.

As for the freshmen, I actually like their class because of how innocent they are. They’re freshmen so there’s only but so much drama they’ll endure. I only know less than a handful of freshmen who are sexually active at my school. Most of them are really carefree and goofy (and crazy lol), but not really engulfed in drama seen with older kids. I remember when I was a freshman (senior class of 2012 now, wooooooo!) guys swore up and down they weren’t virgins or did this and that only to find out later that they were just as innocent as everyone else. So I think it’s good how they have them I think.

    2. Munro and Annie do look older than their characters. I hope the writers do not hold any of the seniors back. Especially Eli, he is smart I want him to go a great university gets his degree meet a lovely woman and move on. Same goes for Fiona and Imogen but not as a couple . I think they may hold Drew back though. LOL

  6. I understand the plots the writers gave college students were complete and total crap, but they picked a horrible time to just let them all go to Kenya.
2011 did a lot for the show. They came on as Lakehurst kids and were generally hated because of JT’s death and because Holly J was horrible, but they grew on the fans and had some damn good plots and acting. Let’s not forget all the laughs we got from Holly J and Anya’s matching outfits.
I don’t think they need to hold someone back evey season or try to give them their own plots, but it’d be nice to have them around to keep things moving.
I’m looking forward to Holly J’s guest spot later on.
